Just thought I’d add this since not a lot of people outside of the nordic countries seem to have seen it. This is a danish police officer discussing a new danish law that says the police should seize the possesions and money of refugees to finance the integration.
He uh, skipped awful quickly to “stealing gold fillings” didn’t he?
Ensuring Democrats keep a majority in the Senate is not only crucial, but a necessity for any hope of replacing a conservative justice with a liberal one, and I fear that not enough people realize that after all of these years (because god forbid people know how the government works 🙄)
The current debacle with the Supreme Court started when Senate Republicans absolutely refused to allow Obama to appoint anyone to the Court to replace Scalia when they blocked the entire process by never holding confirmation hearings for Merrick Garland; do you really think Republicans won’t do the same thing if they regain the Senate? If Biden is re-elected, but Republicans win the Senate, then they will absolutely pull the same stunt they did in 2016 with Obama and Scalia’s open seat and refuse to let Biden put another justice on the Court in hopes that they will win the presidency next time and get to steal another seat.
I’m honestly less worried about our likelihood of winning the presidency again in 2024 than I’m worried about the Senate. People need to vote blue down ballot, we cannot have split ticket voting.
I’ve been trying to figure out why the “destroy the supreme court as an institution” posts have been rubbing me the wrong way because I do think there are valid and worthwhile criticisms of the supreme court as an institution but I think it’s because I don’t feel confident the people writing and sharing those posts understand that republicans made the supreme court this way on purpose. We don’t get to choose supreme court justices but we get to decide who does and if more people who were not republicans had cared about that in 2016… well. Blaming the system or the institution is often a really easy way to absolve yourself of responsibility and we are not doing that!!
